Year of establishment: 1997 (as the Prof. Zdzisław Czeppe’s Polar Research and Documentation Department). The unit was created as a result of the merger of the Laboratory of Lichenology and Lichenoindication of the Institute of Botany (existing since 1994) with the Laboratory of Polar Research named after Prof. Zdzisław Czeppe of the Institute of Geography of the Jagiellonian University. Currently, the unit also serves as the National Antarctic Data Center (JCADM).
The initiator, organizer and long-term head of the unit was Prof. Maria Olech, botanist, lichenologist, distinguished researcher of the polar regions. Professor emeritus since 2011.
